Advances In Hair Restoration

There have been many advances in the hair restoration technology. You can read our guide for more facts and information concerning this technology and learn more about it…

Hair restoration in the early days

When hair restoration procedures were conducted in the 70’s and 80’s, patches of hair were transplanted on the head. Hair was restored in patches onto the head which looked very unnatural. These patches of hair were previously called plugs. Even the rate of success of these transplantations was less than 50%.  When such procedures to restore hair were performed in the early days, you needed about 20 hairs to achieve good results, but there has been much advancement in hair restoration procedures. The use of medication such as Rogaine has also been reduced and advanced restoration procedures are used.

Changes in hair restoration

Hair restoration has experienced a dramatic change from the 70’s and 80’s. Where 20 hairs were needed for transplantation to take place, the procedure only requires about 3 hair follicles to achieve substantial results nowadays. Even more so, the procedures for hair transplantation have improved to such an extent that there are different techniques for you to choose from. You might need more than one procedure to achieve good results, but the results are permanent and the success rate is about 90% now. There are many hair restoration procedures that are being used and we shall take a look at some of them.

Scalp Flap Surgery

There is a scalp flap surgery to restore hair. The part of the scalp that does not bear any hair is cut out and is replaced with a flap of scalp that bears hair. There are barely any scars left after the procedure and the benefits of this procedure is that you have normal hair growth even on the front hairline and the hair pattern is not distorted after the surgery, which shows how successful this process is.

Follicular unit transplantation

There have been some more advances in hair restoration which are likely to be more successful, less painful and not too complicated. One of these advancements includes the follicular unit transplantation.  This procedure is known to be the most reliable with a success rate of 100%. This technique ensures that you have hair that looks natural. it involves the transplanting of hair onto the patients head in groups of 1 to 4. This procedure allows the doctor to transplant as many as a thousand grafts in a single surgery.

Direct hair implant

In addition, direct hair implant (DHI) has also been introduced and is an advanced procedure of hair restoration that doesn’t require any major surgery. Follicular units are extracted and the use of micro surgical tools makes this process a painless and simple one. The hair follicles are prepared for transplantation and once they are ready, the hair is transplanted onto the scalp in a way that it looks natural rather than sticking out like the plugs did when hair restoration technology was not in its advancing stage.
